뉴욕타임스는 지난 8일 올해 ‘전미도서상(National book Awards)’ 최종 후보로 뽑힌 작품들을 소개했다.

전미도서상재단측이 발표한 2019년 수상 후보작은 5개 부문에서 25개 작품이며, 수전 최(50) 씨의 '트러스트 엑서사이즈(Trust Exercise)'는 소설부문 최종 후보로 선정됐다.

트러스트 엑서사이즈는 가난한 홀어머니 밑에서 자란 새라와 부유한 가정의 데이비드의 사랑과 헤어짐을 통해 사회계층의 부조리를 고발한 작품이다.

최 작가는 한인 아버지와 유대인 어머니 사이에서 태어나 텍사스에서 유년시절을 보내고 예일대를 거쳐 코넬대에서 미술학 석사를 받았다. 1998년 '외국인 학생(The Foreign Student)'으로 문단에 데뷔했다.

전미도서상은 퓰리처상과 함께 미국의 대표적인 양대 문학상이다. 지난해 전미문학상의 최종 후보로 이름을 올렸던 폴란드의 여성작가 ‘올가 토카르추크’는 올해 노벨문학상을 수상했다.

1950년 설립된 전미도서상은 비영리기관 내셔널 북 재단(National Book Foundation)이 운영하며 매년 소설, 논픽션, 시, 아동문학, 번역서 등 5개 분야에서 한 작품씩을 선정한다. 최종 후보에게 1천 달러와 메달이 지급되고 최종 우승자에게는 1만 달러와 청동 조각상이 수여된다. 올해 시상식은 11월 20일 뉴욕시에서 열릴 예정이다.
